Chemistry September 28 - October 2, 2015 a

Well done, Third Grade Chemistry students!  Your posters show that you have learned a lot of information about atoms!  Now we are going to extend that learning by showing how atoms form molecules to create .....Everything!  We will discover how molecules are put together and make some models using marshmallows and toothpicks: H20, NaCl, C6 H12 O6.  We will also continue to talk about the states of matter.

On Metric Monday, we will again conduct a volume lab - with a surprise result.

This Wednesday, Third Grade is responsible for reading the scripture during Chapel.
Numbers 11: 4-29.  Since this a very long passage, I will divide it up into parts so several students can participate.  I will have print-outs on Monday.

Math for Week of September 28- October 2, 2015

This week in Math we will review the skill of rounding and estimating.  On our test last week, I saw that most children were struggling with this concept.  So we will spend an intensive week on this skill.  Monday through Friday we will practice, practice and practice again on this skill.  Any help you give your child at home will be beneficial to him or her in class.

Chemistry September 21-25, 2015

The element posters are great!  We will enjoy the presentations so that we can all learn more about copper, nickel, potassium, gold, cesium, and zirconium! During "Metric Monday" in chemistry we will practice the scientific method and conduct a volume lab.  Tools will include graduated cylinders, beakers, and pipettes.  We will learn the correct way to use these tools and to look for the meniscus of  the liquid.  We will use the SI measurement for volume which is Liter(L) and milliLiter (mL).  We will also review our first unit in preparation for a test next week.

History - Project Trojan Horse

Project: Trojan Horse

Construct a 3-D model of a Trojan horse.
Suggestions for materials are: cereal boxes, Lego's, craft sticks or
Popsicle sticks.
If you google Trojan horse, you will get ideas on how you can make yours. You can also go to www.dltk-kids.com.  There is a 3-D horse that you can assemble. If you use that web site, print the black and white version and color your horse.
Write a paragraph about the Trojan horse.  The paragraph must have 5 complete sentences. What was its purpose of the Trojan horse, how was it built, how did it get through the gate, and how did it help the Greeks win the war?

This project will be due on October 9th.

Chemistry Project Information

Today we chose our elements!
Jack - Nickel
Emily - Copper
Emma - Gold
Katharine - Krypton
Zachary - Zirconium
Collin - Cesium
Mrs. Carroll - Iron*

We are doing our research here at school.  The information required is:

1.  Element Name (Iron)*
2.  Symbol (Fe)*
3.  Number (26)*
4.  Color:  silvery-gray*
5.  Classification:  transition metal*
6.  State:  solid*
7.  Protons (26)*
8. Neutrons (30)*
9.  Electrons (26)*
10.  Uses (tools, magnets, human body)*

Students, you are to create a display of your element showing these 10 facts.  It can be a poster, a chart, a model - any way you you would like to share the information is fine as long as you include these 10 facts.

Your work needs to be correct, neat, and on time!  This project is due on Friday, September 18, but you may bring it in earlier if you would like to.  I am looking forward to these awesome projects, and I will get busy on my own project!!

Chemistry September 7-11, 2015

Great job, third graders!  You learned so much last week about atoms - this week we will use those skills to explore the 118 elements!  Well, we won't actually learn about all of them, but we will become more familiar with the Periodic Table of Elements.  Each of you will research one of the elements (I will assign it to you) and create a poster about it to share with the class.  We will do our research in class but you will make your poster at home.  You can be as artistic and creative as you would like - just include all of the requirements.  Parents, feel free to email me if you have questions!

Requirements for the Element Poster:
1.  name of the element
2.  chemical symbol of the element (such as Au for gold)
3.  atomic number of the element (such as 6 for carbon)
4.  a diagram of the element (showing protons, neutrons, and electrons)
5.  5 things that are made from this element

This Element Project is due on Wednesday, September 16.

We will NOT have a vocabulary test on Friday, September 11.
